Late Lamented Arch Bishop Dr. Philipose Mar Theophilus was a multifaceted mortal being and a visionary. His grit to initiate many projects and programmes had attained fame during his lifetime.
His Grace Dr. Philipose Mar Theophilus relied on legal framework rather than loose–knit ideas. One good example is that he registered Charitable Trusts, to promote education and relief work among the sick, the poor and the victims of natural calamities. One such Trust is the Malankara Orthodox Church Council of Bombay (MOCCB) which in later years promoted many educational institutions. When His Grace constituted MOCCB there was only one school in the Diocese i.e. St. Thomas School at Kalyan .Today, after three decades of the formation of Bombay Diocese, MOCCB has become a great educational hub running several schools and junior Colleges in Maharashtra and Gujarat. The first of the schools established by His Grace, St. Mary’s Multipurpose School, holds its sway in Navi Mumbai as the topmost educational institution with about 6500 students on the roll. Yet this institution refuses to accept failure of even a single student at Secondary and Higher Secondary examinations.
MOCCB does not stay aloof, of its own development. It guides and helps Parishes to establish and manage their own institutions giving guidance and sound advice and expertise to keep away from legal tangles. Mumbai Diocese is today the proud manager of dozens of schools, seriously involved in the task of removing illiteracy from the masses and ensuring employment for the people. It is not fair to ignore the pioneering ground work His Grace did at Pune for the cause of education .We mentioned above the grit and determination of this great visionary .A sterling example, we may identify is St. Thomas Public School he started in1989, at Kirkee, Pune with a Pre-School in the unfinished Church building which is now a model School being cited by the Education Department both for the high standard of education and for maintenance of School records. This is a school which is placed in A1 Grade consistently by the Department of Education – a full –fledged Secondary School.
It was in the late 80’s when His Grace repeatedly expressed his cherished desire to see Pune as an educational hub and an epicenter for various educational and cultural activities. While the Pune Diocesan people were not much active on this front, his worthy successor His Grace Geevarghese Mar Coorilos with his relentless hard work and consistent endeavors made it materialize. The Last educational institution initiated by MOCCB is Dr. Mar Theophilus School in village Dhanori, in the suburb of Pune city.
